July 3, 2010 – Pacific City / Cape Kiwanda

Another long and interesting day. Sarah went swimming while I sat in the club house looking over the ocean. Later in the day we took a walk out to the beach and out onto the dune where Athena read to us and we watched people gather for the firework show. The crowd was smaller than predicted, and there were a few college age folks on the dune with us. The beach below had lots of cars, and five police and fire patrol vehicles. For the first hour or so the officials seemed to try and enforce the firework Ban, but after that, they turned off their lights and gave up the fight. The college kids on the dune were setting off large fireworks, the people on the beach were shooting them directly over the crowd and we could see the police vehicles near the surf in the light of the explosions. The police lost the battle against the people. We were amazed by the number of people who had disregard for the law, these were not sparklers, these were rockets. As the evening progressed there were so many fireworks, that the actual display was hard to discern. The local fireworks display committee should just advertise “Fireworks on the beach, bring your own” and let the citizens put on the show.  I guess Americans value their freedom and really still decide what laws they are going to be governed by. Originally we wanted freedom from the crown, now are we looking for freedom from our own government?
