October 23, 2013 – The California State Railroad Museum

We arrived in California Yesterday after noon. Our first stop is the Lake Minden Thousand Trails in Nicholas California where we stayed while visiting the California State Railroad Museum which is totally worth the 16 hour trip from Salem Oregon. (Yes, we drive slow and lolly gag a lot. About half the time was spent wondering how to get rid of the fruits and vegetables before arriving at the agriculture checkpoint on the California border. – In our brilliance we came up with our normal uniquely brilliant solution; We furiously worked to eat, and destroy everything in the fridge before arriving at the checkpoint fearing that failure to be clean of veggie would be an all out Bonnie and Clyde event with the long arm of the law. Should they stop us and we still have any organic material that might have contained chlorophyll on board it would surely be a crime that would lead them to other crimes should they inspect the motor-home and discover I ripped the tag off the mattress on our bed as well, then things might get real ugly and it would most likely be curtains for the loser of the battle. We now know what it might have felt like to be in Bonnie and Clyde’s shoes, even if it was only for a short moment of time. We got rid of all the good food via consumption. Athena and Sarah will not need to eat for a week. Thankfully we were able to honestly cross the border, and were once again on our way to The California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.) This is a small sample of why it takes our clan multiple days to reach Central California.

We experienced a beautiful fall journey.

We arrived! Only two women instead of three, as one defected and got married. Humph! The museum is in Old Town Sacramento. We parked at the capital street garage about a half mile away. Was a bit of hike, too much considering we still had the museum to tour once we got there. The garage charged $10.50 for 3.5 hours, the museum is $5.00 for kids under 17 and $10.00 for adults.

The museum is one of the finest displays I have ever seen on recreating the story of the rail roads of old. Here it shows the unknownworkman who’s job it is to maintain all the structural aspects of the rail system.

Some of the cars and locomotives can be entered, and all had knowledgeable enthusiast on board hired to tell us about the equipment and the stories that might have went with it.

Amtrak is here! Looks like you would have to be young to drive this train. That is some ladder!

They have kitchen on the dining car, but the cooks are so old they are petrified. That being said, the current food service is slow.

This a hallway leading to a 1937 era Dining car. This was considered the plush car of the Hollywood élite. To me it looks WWI submarine in pink.

This is a wickedly knarld exhibit one locomotive but yet there are locomotives everywhere. From some angles it looks like it is flying.

The Train museum is cool, classy and elegant! A must see if you are able to get to Sacramento. The other we liked are the Orange railroad in Paris California for the hands on climbing though experience; the Railroad Museum in Golden Colorado for its rides and unique items, and the Golden Spike in North Platte Nebraska as it is a working rail yard. So if you get around, that your to do list!

Back at camp we find a fisherman out on the end of our fishing dock.
