Holly is working hard on her school, so we decided to leave her behind and go see Bayside park in Chula Vista.  This park is located right behind the Chula Vista RV Park at 460 Sandpiper Way  Chula Vista, CA 91910 – (619) 422-0111.  I give their phone number, because this has to be one of the cleanest, best kept parks we have found South of San Diego. Chula Vista RV Resort is a family park, which is even more rare. The spaces are about as tight as any other private park, and many have a great view of  Bayside park and at least a partial view of bay. If you are fluent in cash, this RV Park is a great option. – Chula Vista RV Resort. We are not fluent in cash, so we had to opt for parking in the parking lot at Bayside park enjoying the area as a day trip. This article covers two parks, the first, Bayside park, and  Imperial Beach pier. One wants to go to these parks on a cold winter day when the sun is out and it is only about 70 degrees. Weekends and holidays in nice weather could make parking not an option.

Well, the sign says we can’t be from in the park 10:00 pm until 6:30 am, not even on foot. So much for the early morning jog. :) We would have a good excuse to sleep in, if we stayed in the RV resort.

They say this guy is San Diego’s best fisherman. I believe them, as we have yet to find a commercial fishing boat any where in the area. All there are are pleasure boats and lots of them too.

The park has a little pier that juts out into the bay, so that the boats will have less room to navigate between the land and the end of the pier on their way in and out. The boaters need the navigational challenges to keep their heart rate up. This helps them not to feel left out in the world of extreme sports. Don’t believe me, try navigating these channels in high winds. The only thing more scary than objects, currents, and high winds is the state marine board.

We enter the part of the park children really enjoy. Toddlers can have a blast on the little plastic play structure. The path is 100% classy. Just watch out for the park police, they drive on it and seem to think they own it. One other important note, there are restrooms at each end of the park. If you do not value your privacy they are mighty handy. If you need to use the john though, there is no expectation of privacy. There is just one room, you enter; and front and center is the toilet no wall or anything around it. Kind of reminds me of a alter, that you do your business on, and everyone watches to make sure your doing it quickly and efficiently; so they can get a turn at the alter before its too late.

The park is so well kept, it reminds me of a golf course. The sand trap however is not for golf balls, but volley balls and young women. Don’t see any playing ball today though, as it is a weekday and only 70 degrees.

The view of the bay from the park trail is wonderful. Parks like these are really nice to wonder around in. Most of the people we met here were very friendly.

These wooden structures are kind of cool. Athena and Sarah were having fun playing on them until the Park Police came. Guess they are only for little kids younger than even Sarah. Turns out, there is a strange phenomenon going on in the Unite States, and I hope my generation is not the cause.  The authorities seem to be  inadvertently banning free play. As kids, we used to ride our bikes to the city parks and have a great time (Raising hell according to some). We were climbing, playing cops and robbers, shooting each other with finger guns, tackling each other in our church clothes, jumping from trees, and any other noisy and dirty activity we could imagine. Today city kids hardly get to walk home from school any more, many the city parks run the kids out if their parents are not right there. Laws are being passed in many municipalities banning kids under 18 from the parks if unsupervised. Kids are not allowed to play in the culdesac streets with out the parents having to fear  prosecution if an inattentive driver hit one of them at 40 miles per hour. Believe it or not, 40 mph seems to be a minimum speed now days, and some residential areas are even posted as such.  Teachers are assigning kids so much homework that many kids could never go out doors. Kids who insist on free play are labeled ADHD and get medicated.  The irony of all this, is the very people who are forcing our kids to stop moving, except in organized sports; are trying prosecute parents for having fat kids.  Life, seems like a very strange form of cognitive dissidence!

Sarah’s last time enjoying a play structure. I think it would be awesome, if Parks would put in adult play structures, young adults under 40 still like to play, but could never admit to such a thing. :)

When your between 10 and 60, you are stuck in doors playing video games and watching team sports. Then when you reach 60, you suddenly realize there is a great outdoor world to see. What then does one do? What everyone does, buy a dog, and have it take you for a walk in the park. (Not the beach, that may be illegal in your area.). Beaches across the nation, are being closed to pets. Pets are no longer able to run free and play either, and some activist groups are attempting to prosecute owners of overweight pets. If you choose to get a pet, do it at your own risk!

We arrive at Imperial Beach Park and Pier. Parking here is free if you can find a spot along the road way. If you can’t find any space along the road, there is a small parking lot that currently charges $2.00 per day; which is very reasonable. The main attraction here appears to be the pier. There is also a life guard protected beach and a couple snack shops. Imperial Beach Pier 2 – Elder Ave (at Ocean Ln) Imperial Beach, CA 91932

Athena and Sarah take in the ocean. We can really never get enough of the sea and shore on a sunny day. Athena touched the water, it left a sticky residue like the icing on a warm old fashion donut does when you are trying to eat it. If you do not know what that feels like, you are missing one of life’s greatest pleasures. Athena had to go to the bathroom to wash the sea water off before we could do anything else.

Never seen a house for life guards before. We usually see just a tall platform with a chair and person sitting in it. This place has a tower built in the house with big windows, a carport with multiple red trucks labeled ”Life Guard” . This has to be an expensive service to the community. Guess they can afford it.

California residents do not appear to like their beaches in the au’ natural. They have to dress them with new sand every few years. They just completed Sanding Imperial Beach last October. ”Imperial Beach – September 7 to October 4 - Timelapse Video | Before & After | Photo Album After four weeks of round-the-clock construction, sand replenishment in Imperial Beach is complete. The result: 450,000 cubic yards of new sand on more than 4,200 feet of beach. Placement began near the Cortez Avenue beach access point on September 7 and moved south toward the end of the rock wall before turning north to finish near Elder Avenue on October 4. Here it is February 2013 and they are still pushing the sand around.

Teens are like teens everywhere. The teens in left of this picture are hanging out making jokes about boys while waiting for their coach to show up. Athena has finally got the sticky substance removed from her hands and is going to join us on pier.

The life guard is checking out a possible criminal act on the beach, we just are not sure which criminal offense we are being protected against. Is the stroller to close to the water? Or is it the health hazard of dogs tainting all the new sand. We will never know, because we are totally un-interested.

Time for us to swagger up the pier. This will be the furthest out to sea Athena and Sarah have ever traveled.

There are three things of value at the end of the pier. There is a little cafe serving seafood which we did not try because the pictures of the food gave us the impression that the portions were a little small based on our appetite, and idea of what we should get per dollar. The second treat is watching all the people fishing. They pull in a little tiny fish by the bucket load which they call mackerel. They chop the heads off and rip the guts out of them right there on the pier, it is quite a show if you like violence. They would cook and eat them, but it is illegal to cook on the pier. The last item of interest from this pier is the unobstructed view of the Coronado bridge and the skyline of San Diego. This is a view that can only be had from out at sea. The pier negates the need for a boat.

Then again, there is the Chula Vista Marina for those who need a view and solitude that the Imperial Beach Pier cannot provide. Good evening and Good Night….. Wonder where our next blog will take us?
