November 24, 2012 – Thanksgiving and the Thousand Palms Oasis

Before we could leave for the Coachella Preserve and the Thousand Palms Oasis, Holly has to play with a tape measure. Her math class needs her to measure from two spots then figure the area and parameter of the side of the RV. I hope I never need this information my self. Should I need it, I am guessing “Big Bill” will be following close behind.

Now she is climbing up the wall. Point number two is half way up.

Now she measures diagonal. I never did ask if it worked. Oh Well, I had something else on my my mind. The one and only thing a man ever has on his mind. No, it’s not football!

It is a classy Thanksgiving dinner with Steve, Sharri, Daniel, Taylor and Alex Stone. Athena and I cooked a turkey in the convection microwave, mashed potatoes, and other things. We had a classy red neck Victorian affair, and frankly, had a very nice time. Though we did miss out families.

Its is about time we arrived at the Cochella Preserve. We had to drive out on Washington Street from the Thousand Trails preserve. Drove about 7 Miles then we turned right on Thousand Palms drive and drove about 1.5 miles. On the left is a dirt parking lot, about 50 yards from this log cabin which is the visitors center.

When I entered the building I learned nothing. No idea what this cabin was for, but is does have a nice fire place, and some notes about 4 different species of rattles snakes that inhabit the area. When visiting this place, wear boots that cover the ankle for both ankle support, and bite protection. If one stays on the the trails, he has little to worry about, as snakes are generally scared of people, and these trails are well used. The best time to walk this preserve is about 2pm as the heat of the day is beginning to wane. This is a very weird concept for us northerners who know the heat starts to wane at sundown.

Here is the oven they used, it is on the back of the fireplace. One wonders how many rattle snakes they fixed up for supper in here?

Here is the trail to the oasis. The sign says it is 1.4 miles round trip to the oasis, double

We head down the trail, and learn not to wear sandals; gravel like sand gets in your toes and it hurts, the sand also creates so much drag, that strollers don’t work.

Athena, Holly and Daniel are waiting on me, I keep taking to many breaks to take pictures of things.

Last time we visited the Oasis, we did not see that the trail continued on, and thought this was the main event.

When I got here, I kept expecting Gilligan to come running from around the shouting wildly “Skipper” “Skipper” He never showed, I guess the sun was getting to me. (Wear a hat)

Now, it looks like we are in Disneyland approaching the tiki hut, but this path only lead us away from the palms.

This trail was actually a little steep and was too narrow for me to walk up. Athena had to put me up on her shoulders and carry me to the top.

Things are a little dry and a bit more sparse.

Steve and Sarah are waiting on me again, I guess I need to do less pictures, more walking.

Our first sign that we might actually be getting somewhere. There is one lone over grown palm sapping up all the moisture from the earth.

We are approaching the Oasis after what seems like five miles of walking.

We find a couple of very thirsty honey bees enjoying the water.

We have arrived, the water and the palms are pretty. The water, when it dries on the edges, leaves a salt ring. We are wondering if it is salt water.

We are watching a duck bathe

The duck told me he flew here to get privacy, and that he would really rather we did not watch him bathe. In this world there competition for everything including privacy.

These palm trees look to be about 150′ tall, which makes us feel very short.
