October 14, 2012 – Busy Busy Busy in Seaside, Long Beach, Salem, and Astoria

We made it to the Seaside Thousand Trails, we drove up from Newport Oregon, took us about three hours. The run was bouncy and rearranged all of our personal effects, but it was a pretty drive. The spaces here are well manicured compared to where we were last, but we are packed in nice and tight. The main thing we need is good internet, and it looks like we are good to go here. All our Mifi cards, phones, and access points are sending and receiving a signal. Now the kids have to work!

A good friend made us a Golf towel that we display. It says One Term, it was made before the Republican primaries. Seems people are very strongly polarized on this topic. No one really seems to understand the polarization that America is experiencing right now. I can’t understand the emotional component that prevents people from liking people who have different ideas about how the country should be run. We do not seem to have many friends here in the Northwest, just because we don’t care for Obama’s policies. I like the man, but but don’t care for his ideals. Seems everyone should have the right to believe either way, and support their candidate accordingly, without threatened friendships. For what it is worth, this towel will be a real collectors item someday. (I hope)

Sarah and Athena show us the minimum number of players required to play volleyball. We did a study that indicates only a world class sprinter could play volleyball alone.

Athena had Jury duty in Salem on October 9th and the girls needed to get annual checkups at the Dr. We went to Salem, Athena left me at Dad’s house where I played with Gavin, who played with the cat. Jury duty was cancelled, probably because they decided to let all the criminals go due to budget cuts. They always do that on election years. (Don’t quote me on the that one. :)) This worked out though, as Athena could be with the girls, as they got all their teenage shots. They get a lot of shots now days, and they made them sick too. A word to the wise, don’t get your shots during the school year, get them in the summer. It is hard to study when ill. Seems odd to go to the Dr. feeling perfectly fine then come home and be sick for a week. Illness is the free gift received with purchase of Dr. visit. The upside, is I guess the girls will not be giving anyone any diseases?

Athena is reading Holly’s college course on Intercultural communications. This class teaches about being sensitive to all political , and racial groups. Tells us to never use emotionally charged words, as it is considered offensive, and could really hurt some one. Then the author destroys people who have pride in our country and uses the charged word “Exceptionalism”. She suggest we need to apologize for being a country where capitalistic values have given us a great standard of living. I believe we can be proud to be American, and proud of our achievements, and not be bad people. We have an obligation to share what has made us great with any country willing to listen, and help them to do the same. We do not need to apologize to the poor and become poor our selves, lets build each other up. If you don’t like capitalist America, and want a scholar to back up your ideas, you can get the book here. She does a great job of destroying American history, Christian ideals, and backing a more socialized society in the name of fairness. Kindness and fairness are a good thing, but many of us love our country the way it is.

It is nice, that the election is about to come to an end, and Athena and I do not have to go back to college. We are old school in our thoughts about the world and will eventually die off leaving the young to form it however they see fit. Athena and I are moving on to topics that are more our speed. I jarred Athena out of bed early Saturday morning and got her a cup of coffee, then took her to what I call the cove. This is a parking area just south of Seaside where we can watch the waves crash into the rocks, the seagulls congregate on the shore discussing the morning catch, and the town of Seaside wakes to a new day. Ever since we stayed in the Best Western Hotel in Cannon Beach 22 years ago and fed Sammy a Cheetos, he has been following us up and down the west coast. Sammy has been faithfully at our side, eating anything we have to offer. Sammy is a loyal friend when food is involved.

Tranquility disappeared as hundreds of surfers began to invade our space at the cove, so we fired up the engine, drove back to camp and got the kids. It seems the kids had forgotten what the Astoria Column was about. Named after John Jacob Astor a big fur trader. The column is a monolithic structure one can climb and get an excellent view of the Northern Oregon Coast. The day is wet, and hazy, but the view is cool anyway.

So this is my view from the car, what a neat place to sit.

We have to cross the Columbia river to get there. This used to be a toll bridge, but the toll is no more, and this cheap guy is happy.

Holly spends about 12 hours a day six days a week doing her college classes. All that work makes me tired.

It is a good thing I can reformat a laptop and re-install Windows in my sleep. Sarah’s laptop had a virus, no scanner, no mal ware remover seemed to be able to touch this one. The virus kept corrupting the system files leading to persistent blue screens of death. It some how became my job to fix it, so I prove my metal, fixing a laptop in my sleep.

This though was worth waking up for! Athena cooked a dead chicken, mashed potatoes and a bucket of gravy! Now, That, is having a good evening and good night!
