Adam and Eve, the first Valentines- God created human beings in his own image
God made humans to mate, to fill, and to manage the earth.
Genesis 1:24-31 Human Beings
New Living Translation (NLT)
24 Then God said, “Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind—livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.” And that is what happened. 25 God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings[a] in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”
27 So God created human beings[b] in his own image.
In the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”
29 Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. 30 And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—everything that has life.” And that is what happened.
31 Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!
And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day.
Thoughts about the sixth day
Wow, was this ever a day, in the last 24 hours of creation, God created virtually everything that walks on the face of the earth. He gave human beings the responsibility to care for all of creation in vs. 28. We humans are not very good at it, as we cannot agree on what proper environmental management means. The earth was made to used, enjoyed, and replenished. The good thing, is between floods, volcanoes, and global warming the earth can repair itself. I see the earth as a giant etch a sketch, we design and build wondrous building and concrete jungles, then earth uses some great force to erase our designs. In their place some new surface, maybe a desert, a jungle, or lake takes the place of the earth we marked up, leaving us a new slate to draw upon. I hope global warming brings back the tropical paradise earth once was thousands of years ago. Until then, God gave us coal to keep us warm.
Remember how we were talking yesterday about what the carnivore ate? Well today, we are told in verse 30, they ate green plants. This does not fit the schema of reality that our fallen mind knows, but God has been around long enough to know what happened. There are other theories on this addressed in yesterday’s article on the 5th day fish and birds. My thought on this is that people could get by on fruits and nuts in Eden, as there were likely more varieties of plants, with a better spectrum of nutrition than what we have today. Our bodies may also process food differently than they did in Eden. Today a diet like that, is not sufficient to fuel our bodies.
Folks who try to live on this Eden diet, do great harm to themselves. I have had the privilege of attending churches where the members were committed to this diet. Each time, I observed one of the unhealthiest group of people I have ever seen in the developed world. The members were very grey on complexion, and some almost blue. Some members were weak for their age, and the more solid members criticized them for their faith. Periodically we will see articles in the news about how these people end up in the hospital in critical condition due to this diet, who knows how many more quietly die in their homes. These people have their hearts in the right place and want to please God by eating what he originally asked them to eat. Their examples unintentionally speak poorly of Christianity and cause many to turn a deaf ear.
After the fall of man, God killed an animal and told Adam and Eve, the first couple, to use the skins as clothing. He also demanded Cain sacrifice animals, but he was a self-declared vegetation, and would not do it. God’s reaction to Cain was not favorable, we will look at that later. When man fell from God’s grace, he was forced to change everything including his diet. Going back to the prescription God had in the Eden World may not be a good idea, and may not please God at all. Many of his people have tried to go back and complete tasks God asked of them at one time. The delay or failure to complete the task may have left it no longer required by God. (Later on, we will see how this worked out for Israel when they reached the promised land and the spies gave their report.) God has a time and place for everything.
Today, God is not asking us to eat seeds and nuts, nor to be vegetarians. Doing either of these things, is not a way to bring about God’s favor. If you can find a way to be healthy eating as a vegetarian for your own purposes, such as feeling sorry for the animals or allergies, there is no law against it. Just don’t say God commands it.
The only way to please God, and be in his Good grace, is to believe in Him, love your neighbor, and share the good news about His soon return with everyone who will listen.
Have a wonderful day, and know God loves you no matter where you go.
